A Dreamy Oceanfront Wedding on the Brunswick Islands

Sunset Beach Wedding, NC

The days leading up to August 30th had brought heavy rain to the North Carolina coast, but as morning broke over Sunset Beach, the weather decided to grant us a little grace. A soft, silvery blanket of clouds drifted over the Brunswick Islands, turning the oceanfront into a serene, romantic backdrop. As the waves gently lapped against the golden sand, Kendall and Will began getting ready for their vows, completely unaware that the quiet coastal sky was setting the stage for a breathtakingly vibrant sunset.

Kendall and Will had traveled from Maryland, determined to joyfully embrace their oceanfront wedding no matter what the weather brought. For Kendall, having a Sunset Beach, NC wedding was a childhood dream realized. The island holds a sweet, deeply sentimental connection for her, serving as a beautiful tie to her late "PopPop," who once called this coastal community home.

The Moments Before I Do

While Kendall was at the beach house getting ready, Will was busy picking up three very important members of the wedding party: their dogs. A mastiff, a boxer, and a lab, the pups had been a priority for Kendall and Will since our very first meeting to plan what photography coverage would work best for them, and everyone was so excited to have them included in the day.

As the final getting-ready moments unfolded up at the house, Hunter and I headed down to the beach to get everything set up. Waiting by the water, the white fabric of the ceremony arch caught the gentle ocean breeze, beautifully adorned with delicate white florals. A single chair was thoughtfully placed to the side, waiting to honor the matriarch of the family. Nature provided the most breathtaking aisle for Kendall, framed by sea-grass-covered dunes and scattered shells that looked like petals left behind by the tide. Even a few small sandpipers scurried past to survey the peaceful scene.

As the ceremony drew near, Hunter and I readied our cameras and audio gear, perfectly positioned to document these sacred vows and all the joyous excitement of the day. The violinist was warming up while the officiant went over the last of his notes with us. Will had made his way down to the archway, nervous but excited to see his beautiful bride in just a few moments.

Expertise on the Coast

How we Prepare for Oceanfront Weddings

Coastal ceremonies are undeniably breathtaking, but they also present a unique set of variables. From unpredictable weather and crowded shorelines to last-minute adjustments to accommodate the tide, a beach wedding requires an adaptable and experienced team. Hunter and I have built specific workflows to ensure we are flawlessly prepared for your seaside vows.

Our preparation starts long before you step onto the sand. We schedule multiple consultations leading up to the wedding, not just to finalize important details, but to genuinely understand your relationship. Knowing our couples on a deeper level allows us to align our coverage with their true priorities. If the coastal weather forces a sudden change in plans, we can intuitively anticipate your needs and pivot seamlessly, all without interrupting the flow of your celebration.

Beyond timeline prep, we dedicate time to meticulously scout your venue. We visit your specific ceremony location at the exact time of day you'll be saying "I do." We map out the natural lighting, secure the most flattering angles, and choreograph our standing positions and video tripod placements in advance. A hallmark of the Hannah Elizabeth Experience is providing a calm, prepared professionalism that elevates your entire day. We aren't just there to document your memories; we're there to help you stay fully present in the moment while capturing keepsakes you'll cherish for a lifetime.

For Kendall and Will, this level of preparation meant everything. Because they were planning from out of state, we hadn't actually met in person until the day of their ceremony. Still, through our planning, we knew exactly what mattered most to them: an intimate celebration with their closest loved ones, and a strong desire to stay fully present in the moment. We also knew how deeply they valued their post-ceremony portraits: a detail that became incredibly important later that afternoon when the sky gave us the most beautiful surprise.

The Ceremony: Saying "I Do" in the Sand

At 7:00 PM, the violinist transitioned from warming up to playing the opening processional. Will waited eagerly with the officiant as the bridal party made their way down the boardwalk of Beach Access 28. Everyone was beautifully dressed in soft shades of blue and tan, and even the dogs sported pearls and flowers on their collars. Soon, they all stood by the ocean, turning to look back toward the entrance where Kendall and her dad would soon arrive.

The opening notes of 'A Thousand Years' began to play, and soon Kendall appeared. She was dressed in a beautiful off-the-shoulder gown, looking as elegant and effortless as her flowing brunette curls and cascading bouquet of green and white florals.

As Kendall stepped onto the sand to walk toward those she loved most, Hunter and I worked seamlessly as a team to capture her breathtaking entrance. At intimate ceremonies, it is vital to document the raw emotion of the day without intruding on the experience.

To give Kendall a beautiful, uninterrupted moment walking down the aisle, we moved parallel to her, making our way quietly down the beach to secure the perfect position. Finally, Kendall made it to Will, and there they stood hand in hand, ready to exchange their vows.

A Surprise during the Ceremony

The officiant was a close family friend of Kendall's. He had pulled Hunter and me aside moments before the wedding to let us know he had prepared a surprise for Kendall and Will that no one else knew about: a special blessing of the rings. Just before Kendall and Will exchanged their wedding bands, the officiant asked that the rings be passed to each guest in attendance so that a short prayer, blessing, or good thought could be said over them. Watching their closest friends and family hold their wedding bands and silently share their support was an incredibly moving experience.

Once the rings were returned to the altar, Kendall and Will slipped them onto each other's hands and exchanged their heartfelt vows. The ceremony then finished with the new Mr. and Mrs. Brickle sharing their first kiss and walking back down the sand-swept aisle together. They spent a few short moments alone, basking in the joy of their next chapter starting, a beautiful new family established with a love to last a lifetime.

Golden Hour on the Brunswick Islands

A Breathtaking Sunset and a Surprise Rainbow

We waited until Kendall and Will were ready, and then we began family photos, seamlessly working through the combinations we had been given. As we were working through our list, we saw a breathtaking golden sunset appear in the west. We asked Kendall and Will if it would be okay to pause the family photos for just a moment to take a few couple portraits with the radiant sun behind them.

The afternoon was not yet done with surprises. We turned Kendall and Will back toward the east to finish their family photos. As we did, a faint, beautiful rainbow appeared directly over the ocean. Kendall and Will have such easygoing and trusting personalities. Because they were so willing to pause with us, we quickly captured the magic of the colorful sky behind them. That quick pivot resulted in one of my absolute favorite moments from the entire day.

When we paused for this portrait, we wanted the pose to reflect two very important things: the deep love between this newly married couple and the profound significance of the beautiful sky behind them. We had them gently hold hands in the center of the frame to show off Kendall's new wedding band, while encouraging her to close her eyes and peacefully soak in the moment. By framing the rainbow directly over Will as he tenderly kissed her forehead, it beautifully symbolized his vow to always care for and protect her. That sweet, grounding kiss seamlessly connected the heavenly sign of the rainbow right back to Kendall, tying the whole emotional moment together.

As mentioned earlier, Kendall's PopPop had recently passed away. His absence was deeply felt by everyone. However, seeing the beautiful break in the western sky paired with this unexpected rainbow brought us all a profound sense of peace. It truly felt as though the Lord had provided a gentle, comforting sign. It was a sweet reassurance for Kendall. Her PopPop was watching over them, and he would have loved every single moment of this special day for his beloved granddaughter.

The Perfect End to a Sunset Beach Wedding

A Joyful Ocean Finale

After that gorgeous sunset intermission, we wrapped up the family photos. We sent everyone back to the beach house to relax so we could capture the final couple's portraits. We had asked Kendall and Will earlier if they would be willing to wade into the ocean with us. They happily took us up on it!

We ended their portrait session with a fun, sweet moment splashing in the waves. They fully soaked in the magic of the beach. It was so clear they were deeply in love and making the most of the day they were given. Kendall and Will's oceanfront Sunset Beach wedding was a perfect reflection of who they are. They are a couple that finds joy in every circumstance. Because they embrace every moment, they constantly find beauty in unexpected places. They are building a beautiful life, surrounded by the deep love of their family.

We finished the evening by packing our cameras in the car and joining the Brickles for a private reception. We cannot thank Kendall and Will enough for trusting us to document their beautiful Sunset Beach NC wedding. We are already so excited to share their full gallery in the weeks to come.
